Karl Menninger & Writer’s Almanac
“The central purpose of each life should be to dilute the misery in the world.” - Karl Menninger
Once, when someone asked him what to do if a person feels he is about to have a nervous breakdown, Menninger replied, “Lock up your house, go across the railroad tracks, find someone in need, and do something for them.”
Today is the birthday of Karl Menninger, one of the deans of Psychoanalysis. I know this becuase my email told me so. You see, every day, I get, in my email, a poem and notices about this day in litereary history, courtesy of Garrison Keillor and the good folks at Writer’s Almanac.
Now, I get busy, so I can’t say I read them every day. Sometimes, I just hit delete. But when I do read the email, I am often glad I did. Plus, it forces me to expose myself to more poetry, which is a good thing indeed.
